The Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees on Thursday approved an additional option to the College’s grading policy.

The policy will include a grade option of “N” to reflect administrative non-punitive withdrawals for special circumstances. The grade, which will only be used in extreme situations that affect the entire campus, such as natural disasters or pandemics, allows a student not to be penalized in areas of financial aid and grade point average in the same way that a “W,” or withdrawal, would.

The Board also accepted bids for four protection, health and safety projects on the Main Campus in Galesburg:

  • A bid of $97,901 submitted by Knapp Concrete Contractors for an accessible sidewalk to the CME.
  • A bid of $231,842.48 submitted by Kreiling Roofing for roof replacement of the CME.
  • A bid of $17,442 submitted by J.P. Benbow Plumbing & Heating for air handling unit replacement in the server room.
  • A bid of $213,995 submitted by Kelly Glass for door replacement on Buildings C, D and E.

In other business, the Board approved the following:

  • Employment of Maddison Foster as coordinator of veterans and military services/financial aid specialist, effective June 1.
  • Resignation of Cassandra Tyler as coordinator of scholarships and donor relations, effective May 31.
  • Resignation of Cindy Koepp as full-time nursing instructor and coordinator of the medical assistant program, effective May 18.
  • Resignation of Bart Slye as full-time welding instructor, effective June 30.
  • Acceptance of a $1,000 Walmart Foundation Local Community Grant through the Galesburg Walmart to support the College’s Take Charge of Hunger program.
  • Acceptance of a $2,500 COVID-19 Nonprofit Response Grant through the Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri to be distributed to Carl Sandburg College Foundation crisis grant awardees from Hancock County.
  • Acceptance of an $8,120 grant through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support the Corporate & Leisure College’s English Language Acquisition (ELA) program. The grant will allow Sandburg to offer the course free of charge for up to 60 adult ELA learners in 2020-21, expand its ELA offering to the Branch Campus in Carthage and cover instructor salary, supplies and testing materials.

The Board’s next scheduled meeting is 7 p.m. June 25. Due to the coronavirus, a location has yet to be announced.
